Why every small business should register under MSME

The tangible benefits of Udyam registration — from faster payments to easier access to credit.

Udyam registration — the online MSME registration process that replaced Udyog Aadhaar in 2020 — is free, takes under 30 minutes, and carries a set of statutory entitlements that most registered businesses never fully use. If your business turnover is below ₹250 crore and your investment in plant and equipment is below ₹50 crore, you almost certainly qualify.

The payment protection most businesses don't know about

Under the MSMED Act, any buyer that purchases goods or services from a registered MSME must pay within 45 days of acceptance. If payment is delayed beyond this, the buyer owes compound interest at three times the RBI bank rate — currently around 15–18% annualised. This is a statutory right, enforceable through the MSME Samadhan portal without going to court.

Large companies are now also required to disclose outstanding payments to MSMEs in their financial statements. This regulatory visibility has genuinely changed payment behaviour in many sectors.

Credit and collateral benefits

  • Priority sector lending — banks are required to lend a portion of their advances to MSMEs; registered businesses get preferential access and processing
  • Credit Guarantee Fund Trust (CGTMSE) — collateral-free loans up to ₹5 crore for eligible MSMEs; the government guarantees a portion of the loan to the bank
  • Lower interest rates — many government schemes cap MSME lending rates 1–2% below standard commercial rates
  • Subsidised trademark, patent, and ISO certification fees
"Most of our clients who register discover they were leaving a statutory payment protection right on the table for years. That alone justifies the 30-minute registration."

Tax and tender advantages

  • Government tenders have purchase preference for MSMEs — many central and state procurement portals mandate a minimum percentage of orders to registered businesses
  • Exemption from certain labour law compliance requirements for micro enterprises
  • Reimbursement of ISO certification costs under government schemes in several states

The registration is linked to your Aadhaar and PAN — there is no physical paperwork and no renewal. If your business details change (turnover, classification), you update the Udyam portal. It is one of the simplest, highest-return compliance steps a small business can take.
